5 things I do to take care of my family + 5 things I do for myself

Me with my teenage daughter and young son

I love being a mum, but it’s really hard work sometimes. Just the day in, day out relentlessness of it. No chance to stay in bed. Making sure we don’t run out of toilet roll. Or clean socks. Remembering which day is P.E.

One of the hardest things is the expectation that you always put your children first. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t, but not always.

We need to look after ourselves too, and not as an after-thought. If we are feeling tired and resentful, we are not going to enjoy spending time with our children (or anyone else for that matter).

I don’t even think about being the perfect mum. It’s not going to happen and I’d rather be myself, quite frankly. That said, I care a lot about my family. Here are the five things I try to do as often as I can.

5 things I do to take care of my family

These are the things that I try to focus on. I’m not saying I do them all of the time, but when I do, they help me feel good about myself as a mother.

  1. Making simple home cooked meals.
  2. Eating together as a family.
  3. Going for walks in the park with our dog.
  4. Chatting, telling stories, sharing memories and making jokes.
  5. Reading bedtime stories.
5 things I do to take care of myself

If I’m going to have the energy and enthusiasm to do any of those things, I also need to take care of myself. I don’t have the time or money to do them every week, but when I do, they help me feel good about myself. When I feel good about myself, I am happier and enjoy being a mother more.

  1. Listening to music.
  2. Seeing my friends.
  3. Dancing.
  4. Wearing nail polish.
  5. Having an early night.
And another thing

Something else we do is to go and see our homeopath.

One of the things I’ve appreciated about having a family homeopath is having genuine continuity of care. My children have been seeing our homeopath since they were babies so she knows them really well. As a homeopath myself, I know how much we benefit from her insight, even though I also prescribe them remedies myself from time to time.

I also have a homeopath, and I take time for myself to go and see her every couple of months or so. I value her warmth, insight, sense of humour and ability to see exactly how I’m feeling and what I need.

Homeopathy for you

Homeopathy isn’t just about fixing symptoms, it’s about helping us to feel as good as we know we can. Homeopathy helps us feel happy, healthy and full of enthusiasm for life.
