Hey! Happy 2016!

We’re more than a week into the new year, and I hope you’ve got off to a flying start!

Do you make resolutions? 

I always do!

Isn’t it exciting and motivating to start the new year with a new notebook or journal, or even a simple to-do list?

You know the feeling, you’re determined that this time all those changes will really happen and your life will be fabulous.

My resolutions

I’ve made 10 resolutions related to my work, well-being, my hobbies, personal life and relationships. 2016 is going to be even more exciting because I’m absolutely sure that I’ve not only made some promises to myself, but I’m really going to achieve them!

Here are the the actions I’ve taken this week to help me gain clarity about my resolutions that I know will help me reach my goals this year. It took a little while, but it has helped me feel clearer about what I want to do, and why.

You can Make this year different too

These simple steps will help you keep your new year promises to yourself.

Set aside 30 minutes without distractions. (Turn off email and your phone.)

Grab your pen and notebook or journal, or even just a simple piece of paper.

  1. WRITE your resolutions down. Research tells us that we are more likely to achieve our goals, simply by writing them down.
  2. STATE your resolutions clearly.
    A – Actionable (begins with a verb – e.g. eat vegetables three times a day).
    C – Challenging (get outside of your comfort zone – research tells us we are more likely to rise to a challenge).
    C – Calendar it! (give yourself a date to achieve it by).
    A – Aspirational and inspiring (it must be something you REALLY want to do!)
    S – Specific (measurable criteria that you can evaluate it by).
  3. SHARE your resolutions.  Choose someone who will support you and perhaps even hold you accountable.
  4. REVIEW your goals regularly. Maybe set a weekly appointment to review your goals.
Ask yourself ‘why?’

Now write down the reasons WHY you want to achieve each of your resolutions. How will your life change when you achieve each goal?

Identify your number 1

From all of the resolutions, choose the one that will have the most impact. This is the one that will help you progress with everything else. This needs to be your priority.

Look at them every day

Keep your resolutions VISIBLE! On the fridge, in your diary, make a screen saver, write them on post it notes and stick them all around you!

Take the next step

A complicated to-do list is just another form of procrastination. Instead, try identifying the first step towards each of your goals and set aside time in your calendar.

These are the strategies I’ve been using this week and I can already feel the impact. I’ve never been this focused and strategic before.
