Why you should see a homeopath before you get really sick

Homeopathy, London, immunity, well-being, prevention, natural health

Homeopathy can be great for fire-fighting.

What I mean by this is that it can work very quickly in an acute situation such as a cold, sore throat or fever, or for another illness.

I love homeopathy for that, and I’m not knocking it, but it sort of misses the point.

By the time we are ill, we are already in some sort of process that has already begun.

This brings me to my next question – why do we get ill in the first place?

Is it germs that make us sick?

I think we all know that most everyday illness is caused by some sort of pathogen that has invaded or multiplied inside our body.

But why is it that one person becomes ill and another person doesn’t?

If germs and viruses are so contagious, then why aren’t we all ill all the time?

What else can make us sick?

In homeopathy we have a reason for this.

We call it ‘susceptibility’.

In a consultation I sometimes refer to this as a weakness.

We all have different areas of weakness. Some of us will have a tendency to sore throats, for example. Others will tend to have cold sores. I’m sure you could think of other examples.

Sometimes we develop a weakness during a time of excessive stress.

Conventional treatments are an additional factor as when symptoms are suppressed without being fully resolved, they often recur.

Is prevention really better than cure?

Preventative homeopathy, on the other hand, takes a longer view.

At a first homeopathic appointment, I not only look at current health concerns, but I also take a full medical history and family medical history as well as looking at general well-being.

These elements combine to give me deeper insight into the cause of recurring or chronic illness.

For some people there may be an inherited weakness – something that ‘runs in the family’.

Homeopaths consider this to be a ‘miasmatic’ cause of illness.

This type of illness will often have been treated with conventional medicine, and often presents as a recurring cycle of symptoms.

For others, there may have been a trigger event – either an illness from which they have never fully recovered, or a period of stress, maybe even a sudden shock that has left them vulnerable.

In homeopathic terms, we’d see this as ‘never been well since…’ and would often be treated with the remedies that would have been helpful at the time.

These are just a couple of examples of different strategies for homeopathic prescribing and also explains why ‘preventative’ or ‘constitutional’ treatment can get to the heart of the illness in ways that acute prescribing doesn’t.

A family Case study

Yesterday I was working with a family who’ve been bringing their children to see me regularly for almost six years. It has been lovely to get to know them over time and makes it very easy for me to suggest remedies when they need them for acute illness.

I also appreciate the trust that has built up between us. My work isn’t just about homeopathy; it is also about relationships.

They first came for eczema treatment for their youngest. His skin was pretty bad and it took a while to fully clear, but once the eczema went away it never came back, and it’s been almost five years now.

Since then, they had a second child and both have had treatment for coughs, colds and also hay fever (the oldest) plus mild eczema (in the second child).

Yesterday we were talking about how both children are susceptible to atopic (allergic) illness and their homeopathic treatment has been focussed mainly on that area plus the upper respiratory system (these two are related when seen from a homeopathic perspective).

Both parents commented on how they have seen their children grow stronger and healthier without the need for steroid creams, inhalers or antibiotics.

They are very happy to rely mainly on homeopathy as they see their boys are thriving.

‘Tracy was recommended to me by a friend and I have too recommended her to pretty much anyone and everyone since. She managed to relieve symptoms and find solutions to a recurring illness I have had for years and for that I am truly thankful. Both Tracy and her practice environment are welcoming and friendly and I felt up-lifted and full of positive energy every time I left one of her sessions.’
