Your liver is amazing

Literally, hundreds of our body functions are carried out by the liver. One way to describe it is that it’s our body’s chemical factory.

Here are three of the most important things it does:

  1. Detoxification
  2. Synthesising nutrients
  3. Processing hormones

The liver works hard around the clock, and really is amazing, but is often taken for granted.

A build-up of toxicity is very common and can make it hard for the liver to carry out its normal functions.

How to know if your liver is happy

If you are generally calm, motivated, have good energy, clear skin, easy periods and are rarely ill, then you can be sure your liver is happy!

How to know if your liver needs help

On the other hand, if you struggle with any of these things, you can be fairly sure that your liver could do with some help.

  • Fatigue
  • Poor memory and motivation
  • Mood swings and depression
  • Bloating, wind, constipation, digestive issues
  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • PMS
  • Acne, eczema
  • Poor immunity

Are you taking anything?

If you feel you are dependent on coffee, sugar, digestive aids, laxatives, antidepressants, painkillers, antibiotics, steroids, HRT or the pill, but you don’t want to be, gentle liver detox is quite probably a good place to start.

What causes a toxic liver?

This is what I typically see.

1. Coffee, alcohol, sugar and processed foods

The typical 21st-century diet includes some of those, at least for most people.

These are rarely the main issue though.

2. Drugs

These are the main cause of liver toxicity.

None of us likes taking them, but sometimes we feel we don’t have any option.

The long-term use of pharmaceutical medication has a massive impact on your liver, for sure.

This is what I see every week in my clinic.

  • Frequent headaches and period pain leading to reliance on painkillers
  • Repeated or extended courses of antibiotics for UTIs, sinus or acne, past or present
  • Years (sometimes decades) of hormonal birth control, plus one or two courses of emergency contraception
  • Prescribed or recreational drugs to help with depression, social anxiety, sleep etc.

Fact: Most of us grow up with visits to the GP and the pharmacy and take medicine when we don’t feel well. Not because we want to, but because we want to get on with our lives.

(That was the story of my life until my mid-twenties and I went to see a homeopath for the first time.)

Drugs, hormones and other medication build toxicity in the liver resulting in low-level ‘chronic’ symptoms of ill-health.

How to have a happy liver

Like many things, the simple things make a big difference.

Daily habits you can do easily for yourself:

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Eat lots of greens.
  3. Eat good fat.
  4. Reduce sugar.
  5. Make time for self-care.

Homeopathy + botanical herbs

I make use of many different homeopathic remedies to gently detoxify the liver, depending on the case history and the symptoms being treated.

These are the two I prescribe most often.

  1. Sepia – clears toxicity from hormonal drugs.
  2. Nux Vomica – clears toxicity from medication.

Homeobotanicals are prescriptions that gently decongest the liver and other organs.

Homeobotanical Liver + Gallbladder formula includes a blend of bitter herbs to support detoxification, such as:

  1. Barberry (or Berberis) – contains berberine, a known tonic to help clear skin.
  2. Dandelion (or Taraxacum) – helpful for liver headaches and night sweats.
  3. Celandine (or Chelidonium) – an all-round tonic for liver, gall-bladder and pancreas.

Autumn is a really good time to take care of your liver, in preparation for the colder months.

To be honest, it’s always a good time to think about your liver.

“I went to see Tracy to regulate my hormones, after many years of using the Mirena coil. She helped me with that in no time. It turned out, that it was just a fraction of the things that I could solve. Homeopathy turned my life around. Tracy has an amazing ability to dig deep inside and find the real causes of physical manifestations and before you know it, they are healed in mysterious ways. She is a wonderful person, very compassionate and caring. “
